Our New Friends

I am playing catch up on my blog as I got behind for various reasons. It is actually mid-March but I am taking you back to early February.

Ashley's passing was tougher than we all expected. Every time we went into Jason's room we automatically looked to the spot where we kept her cage. It was so very empty! Additionally, at meal times one of us was constantly saying "I am going to save a bit of this for Ashley!" only to realize that we couldn't take her treats any longer. We really missed our friend, and her late sister Sabrina.

Therefore, we decided pretty quickly to head to the pet store and look for two new friends. Our first trip on a Monday was a wasted trip - they were out of stock! So, on Friday February 1st, we went back. We settled on 2 small female hooded, or fancy, rats.

Meet Taffy and Oreo a.k.a. Wee Dee. They were very tiny and very fast!

Oreo a.k.a. Wee Dee was quite outgoing and friendly. She was happy to be held any time we opened the cage door. Taffy took about 2 weeks to really get comfortable and warm up to us. Every time we tried to catch her she would dart away from us.

Now, they are quite at home and they are being kept in the gameroom where there is constant activity and human company. We have really enjoyed their antics. So funny are they! One evening, one of them was running in the wheel and the other one decided to jump in too. We had one rat holding on for dear life and spinning upside down while the other one was running really fast. We were all dying laughing.

This week, they have begun to sleep in their food bowl. So much so, that I turned the 2nd bowl right-side-up thinking they would at least not sleep in with the food. One rat will climb in the bowl, and curl up with an arm, leg or even head over the edge, and the other rat will drape herself over the top of the first rat. After awhile, the bottom rat must get tired of being squished, because they trade places!

Oh, neither of these pictures are all that great. We will have to try again. Taffy has a brown stripe down her back, and Oreo has more like 2 dashes or spots on hers.

Anyway - the family feels complete again!

Just catching up on your last 2 posts! Glad to see that you have 2 new family members and again I say with all the love in my heart better you than me:) Looks like they will be spoiled with the love any pet deserves. JASON!!! Tell your son I can remember like yesterday when he was only 4! It blows my mind that my own child hood as I remember moved at a snails pace and here I am as a parent and it just fly’s right by. Well if we can not do anything to stop it then I guess you will just have to tell him- Happy birthday and so very proud of the great teenager he is becoming. The funny part Jamie is that little class full of pre-kg kids the thought that they are all going into HS next year- oh my I know there were some pretty lets call them active children in there.

Love and blessings to your crew,
Melissa

Thanks for sharing the pics of your visit to the Pacific N/W and your trip over to Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic penn. We had taken a trip, only regret we didn't take the drive about the penn (would have been more than aa day trip)!

During our stay in Bellevue, WA '71-'74, we managed a trip over there as well as ferry ride over to Victoria to visit the gardens (5 family members and slept over- night in tent (those were the days when we didn't have to take numerous potty breaks), what fun. Also trips to Portland, OR (beautiful roses and zoo), Vancouver, BC and a Memorial Week-end camp-out in Baker Nat'l Forest (cold and damp and a couple of miles up the road which was closed because of snow.

Again, thanks for sharing these with us.
